When You Don’t Know How to Pray

Today has been one of those days where prayer has felt confusing. I’ve found myself sitting in silence, not really knowing what words to say. My heart feels full, yet my thoughts feel scattered. I’ve been asking God not just for answers, but for help even in knowing how to pray.

It’s a humbling place to be. Prayer is supposed to be this beautiful connection with the Father, and yet sometimes it feels like stumbling in the dark, not sure where to step. Maybe that’s exactly where He wants me. Not with polished words or perfect petitions, but with dependence.

Romans 8:26 says, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” That verse has carried me today. It reminds me that I don’t have to have the right words, because Christ intercedes for me. He stands in the gap, lifting up prayers on my behalf when I don’t know what to say.

So today, my prayer has been simple:
“Lord, teach me how to pray. Give me wisdom. Shape my heart to align with Yours. And when I can’t find the words, let Your Spirit speak for me.”

And maybe that is enough. Maybe prayer is less about eloquence and more about surrender. Less about perfectly formed requests and more about trust in a God who already knows my heart.

If you’ve ever found yourself unsure of how to pray, you’re not alone. It’s in those quiet, wordless moments that God draws near, reminding us that prayer is not a performance. It’s a relationship.

So today, I rest in that truth. I don’t need to have all the words. I just need to bring my heart.

Much love and many prayers,
Vanessa
